Merseyside Police have thanked the members of the public who called 999 to report that an HGV was ‘swerving across all lanes on the M6’.
After receiving the call, Roads Policing Unit officers rushed to the area and quickly found the HGV moments before going the wrong way around Haydock Island.
An officer attached to the unit tweeted that the driver was three times over the legal drink-drive limit and that he had been charged and remanded into police custody.
One Twitter user said:
‘[the driver] should be banned from driving an HGV for life for that! If you’ve got an issue with alcohol driving a 40 ton truck isn’t the career for you!’
Another Twitter user responded by saying: ‘Trouble is, he is a foreigner so he’ll get banned in the UK but they can still drive in Europe. Six months in prison is [the] best option.’
